being present

Takes a lot of practice

Sometimes we can go to the studio with things on our minds. Maybe for most of us that's always the case! So something I'd like you to try when you go to your next class is to practice letting these thoughts go. I know - easier said than done - and that's ok!

Even when we're able to finally clear our heads, thoughts will have the tendency to float back into view from time to time - this is normal! It's the practice of noting their presence - and then allowing them to float away that's important. Not to worry - if these thoughts are important, they will come back to you. It's not necessary to put forth the effort to grasp on to them. Relax.

Now, try to move your thoughts to the present. Fill your mind with the sounds in the room - the measure of your breath - the strength in your muscles - the alignment of your body. Next, try to realize that none of us really have the ability to control anything - merely influence - and the level of influence we can have on a situation is directly related to how attuned and present we are in that moment. This is a lesson that not only serves us on our mats, but in our daily lives.

Practice being present today (and every day), and you will learn how to more effectively influence each situation, and in turn, better influence your future.
